K: I seem to have mochi on the mind these days. Just a couple of months ago I shot Benkyo-do for the new eat.shop san francisco. I must admit I’m a little worried though about Benkyo-do’s experience level. After all, they’ve only been around since 1906. Fugetsu-do has been in business since 1903, which makes this small store the grandaddy of American mochi makers. Though many Americans know mochi because it’s sprinkled on their fro-yo, don’t let that be the only way you experience this Japanese confection. There are many varieties and flavors, each one tastier than the next.
